Los cacharreros

“도서관을 자기 집처럼 느끼지 못하는, 멀고 낯선 이웃들과도 지속적인 관계를 맺을 수 있을까?” 이 질문은 자연스럽게 또 다른 질문으로 이어졌습니다. “물리적인 경계나 공간은 관계 맺기에 있어서 얼마나 중요한가?” Los Cacharreros는 잡동사니 장수를 뜻하는 스페인어로, 잡동사니 장수는 마을을 떠돌며 집집마다 소식을 전파하는 몫을 했습니다. 그 때문에 자잘한 이야깃거리도 그저 지나치지 않는 사람을 '참견쟁이', '오지랖 부리는 사람'이라는 뜻으로 'Los cacharreros'라고 부르기도 했습니다. 현대적 감각에서 해석하면, 'Los Cacharreros'는 이웃에게 먼저 다가가고, 말을 걸고, 사람들을 서로 연결하는 일이 환대와 사회적 포용의 중요한 실천이 될 수 있음을 보여줍니다.  〈Los Cacharreros〉는 도서관이 지녀야 할 오지랖,  곧 이웃에게 먼저 안부를 묻고 관계를 이어가는 환대의 감각을 담은 컬렉션입니다.  2026 NEXT LIBRARY Satellite Seoul의 세션 〈Constellation of Library〉에서 참여자들과 함께 만든 공동 컬렉션입니다. “Is it possible to build lasting relationships even with distant, unfamiliar neighbors—those who do not feel at home in the library?” This question naturally led us to another one: “Are physical borders or spaces really that important?” We came to agree that what truly matters is a mindset that nurtures and sustains curiosity, and we gathered our materials from that perspective. Los Cacharreros is a Spanish word meaning “junk dealers” or “tinkers.” Traditionally, these traveling dealers moved from village to village, carrying small goods and sharing news from house to house. Over time, the term also came to refer to people who do not simply pass by small stories—those sometimes seen as “meddlers” or “nosy people.” In a contemporary sense, Los Cacharreros can be understood as a form of hospitality: the practice of reaching out first, starting conversations, and connecting people with one another as an act of social inclusion. 〈Los Cacharreros〉 is a collection that reflects the kind of “benevolent nosiness” a library might need: the willingness to ask after neighbors first, notice small stories, and keep relationships alive. This collection was co-created with participants during the 〈Constellation of Library〉 session at NEXT LIBRARY Satellite Seoul 2026.
